Pre-Visit Engagement: How Museums Should Prepare Children Before They Arrive

Over the past few months, I've had the opportunity to speak with museum education directors and educators across Saudi Arabia, Australia, Egypt and the US.

One theme has come up again and again:

The museum visit often begins too late.

Children typically arrive knowing very little about the exhibition they'll experience. They spend 30 minutes to an hour exploring, then leave. For many, the learning ends as soon as they walk out the door.

But what if the visit started days before they arrived?

Turning children into explorers before they walk in

Imagine receiving a simple creative challenge at school or at home:

"You're about to become a marine explorer."

or

"You're going to investigate the secrets of an ancient city."

By the time children enter the museum, they're no longer passive visitors — they arrive with questions, ideas, and curiosity.

The museum becomes the next chapter of a story they've already started.

Pre-visit engagement makes museums more inclusive

This approach can also make museums more inclusive. Preparing children beforehand helps reduce uncertainty and gives every learner — including many neurodiverse students — the opportunity to arrive with greater confidence and purpose.

The visit becomes richer because children already have context.

It becomes something they remember, revisit, and share with others. This is the same principle behind participatory museum storytelling: a single visit becomes a longer learning arc that children, schools, and families keep returning to.

That's one of the biggest insights I've taken away from my conversations with museum professionals over the past few months:

The most meaningful museum experiences don't begin at the entrance and they don't end at the exit.
